BAI Services Certified Industrial Hygienists are experienced investigators of indoor air quality problems including issues of chemical odors, chemical contamination, and mold or other bioaerosol contamination. In these investigations, it is our experience is that it is important to consider all potential factors that contribute to comfort or health complaints.

The combination of industrial hygiene expertise and indoor air quality experience allow us to simultaneously evaluate the many possible sources of indoor air quality problems. When needed, we have the capability to develop sampling protocols, conduct sampling, and interpret results. We can also recommend intervention or mitigation procedures and practices to minimize risks. In addition, our in-house toxicology and risk assessment expertise can be called upon when questions about health effects or health risks arise.

For example, we evaluated the potential bioaerosol contamination of a building interior and air-handling unit after water damage in a commercial building. Our involvement began after several employees complained of health effects to the state labor department and their U.S. senator; and they were also threatening litigation. We conducted site inspections and air sampling and made recommendations for remediation. We also monitored the remediation work, following up with a final inspection and sampling. In addition, we assisted in risk communication with store employees and follow-up meetings with state labor department compliance officers.

We also conducted an investigation of indoor air quality complaints at a large municipal building. Although we were initially asked to sample for molds, it quickly became apparent that this was not needed. However, the investigation did require air sampling for chemical contaminants and indicators of indoor air quality, and evaluation of potential limitations of the heating and air conditioning system capabilities.
